TEACH Grant Counseling

Because of the unique eligibility and service requirements of the聽TEACH Grant program聽as well as the conversion from grant to loan when the obligation is not met,聽eligible students聽wishing to receive TEACH must have specialized counseling.

While the TEACH Grant Program was originally funded at annual $4,000 awards, the federal budget sequester that went into effect on March 1, 2013, has adjusted the amounts that could be awarded students within subsequent timeframes. All other provisions of the program remained the same.

Instead of $4,000 annual amounts, awards first disbursed during these timeframes were reduced accordingly:

聽 - 10/01/2024 - 09/30/2025: $3,772 reflecting a 5.7% cut.
聽 - 10/01/2023 - 09/30/2024: $3,772 reflecting a 5.7% cut.
聽 - 10/01/2022 - 09/30/2023: $3,772 reflecting a 5.7% cut.

聽 - 10/01/2019 - 09/30/2020: $3,764 reflecting a 5.9% cut.*
聽 - 10/01/2018 - 09/30/2019: $3,752 reflecting a 6.2% cut.*
聽 - 10/01/2017 - 09/30/2018: $3,736 reflecting a 6.6% cut.*
聽 - 10/01/2016 - 09/30/2017: $3,724 reflecting a 6.9% cut.
聽 - 10/01/2015 - 09/30/2016: $3,728 reflecting a 6.8% cut.*
聽 - 10/01/2014 - 09/30/2015: $3,708 reflecting a 7.3% cut.
聽 - 10/01/2013 - 09/30/2014: $3,964 reflecting a .89% cut.
聽 - 03/01/2013 - 09/30/2013: $3,712 reflecting a 7.2% cut.

Congressional action on the annual federal budget (hence the October 1 effective dates now) will continue to determine any other cuts or restoration to the program.

*Though not a substantial difference, some students delay requesting TEACH awards until after October 1 in order to receive the increased amount when there are increases in funding. Tuition bills remain聽due as scheduled, and payments are required accordingly to avoid late fees.

Students seeking initial TEACH Grant funding must got through a 2-step (initial and award) in-person counseling process. Students seeking renewal in subsequent years still聽must complete the聽annual in-person award counseling requirement.

Finally, upon changing majors to a program other than an聽eligible academic program, withdrawing, or graduating, students need to complete an online exit counseling session.

Additionally, this grant program has聽unique and detailed requirements聽that must be met in order to avoid the聽grant becoming an unsubsidized student loan.

Initial Counseling

To verify that a student understands the聽teaching requirement聽and to receive an overview of the program, college and program-specific counseling is the first step in the awarding process. This counseling is with a staff member who can also answer questions you may have.

Students who believe they qualify聽for TEACH and wish to be considered for the grant should begin by scheduling a counseling session with the staff noted below.

Exit Counseling

As with federal loans, federal regulations require that students who have received a TEACH Grant complete online exit counseling upon changing majors to something other than a聽eligible academic program, withdrawing from school, or graduating from their program of study.

The online聽聽session聽provides information about the terms and conditions of a TEACH Grant service agreement, as well as the rights and responsibilities that apply if your TEACH Grant is converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan.

Students have the option聽to review the content of the online聽聽at any time using the "demo" option. Note: The demo option gives you information but does not fulfill your counseling requirement.
