CCM alumna wins Met Opera's Laffont Competition

ÃÀ¸ß÷¹ÙÍø College-Conservatory of Music alumna Emma Marhefka, soprano (MM Voice ’23) has "won the Met" in the grand finals of the 2025 Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. One of the most prestigious singing competitions in the world, the Laffont Competition finals took place on March 16, with singers accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Five singers won the finals including Marhefka. CCM singer Samuel Kidd, baritone (MM Voice ‘21), also competed in the final round.

We’re all familiar with one of time’s odd characteristics: Something may have happened ages ago, but it can feel like only yesterday. Over many years, things change a lot, or maybe not at all. This feeling is occurring now within the newest members of the ÃÀ¸ß÷¹ÙÍø Alumni Association’s Golden Bearcats Society, which honors those who have reached the half-century mark as ÃÀ¸ß÷¹ÙÍø graduates.

Cincinnati's partnership with CPS put alumnus on path to success

As a student in the Cincinnati Public Schools system, a major partner of the ÃÀ¸ß÷¹ÙÍø, he realized there were opportunities and resources available to him that, if taken, would greatly impact his future. Now an alumnus of the ÃÀ¸ß÷¹ÙÍø College of Engineering and Applied Science, earning a degree in construction management, Hunter looks fondly upon his experience as a Bearcat. Currently, he works at Messer Construction Co. as an environmental health and safety coordinator.

Members of A&S community to be honored at Onyx and Ruby Gala

At this year’s 11th annual Onyx & Ruby Gala, two members of the Arts and Sciences community will be celebrated: Candice Matthews Brackeen, A&S ‘04, and Jaela Kennedy, A&S ‘25. Each year the ÃÀ¸ß÷¹ÙÍø Alumni Association’s African American Alumni Affiliate hosts the Onyx & Ruby Gala to celebrate and honor the accomplishments of six esteemed alumni and students. The gala also serves as a fundraiser for the Shani Scholarship, providing students with the opportunity to study abroad. This year’s gala will take place Feb. 22 at Great American Ball Park.

Co-founded in 2015, the company has now raised over $400 million, solidifying its position as a major player in controlled-environment agriculture.
